Dear SCAA Community,

Rain, rain, go away. Hey, it worked! Could it be that spring has finally sprung? Despite what the calendar says, we may just have to keep our fingers crossed a bit longer to keep those rain clouds at bay. But in the meantime, what better way to ring in this weekend's equinox than to provide a second chance to one (or more) of Shanghai's cats and dogs in need? Don't forget - Adoption Day this Sunday at O'Malley's!

April is unbelievably just a few weeks away along with the start of Adult Cat Adoption Month! Too often passed over in favor of cute, little kittens, we like to remind our potential adopters out there to debunk the "adult kitty myth" and consider one of our older fosters as a "forever home" addition to your household. Every cat has its own character, but our adult kitties have proven time and time again to make wonderful companions to humans and fellow pets alike, and the proof is indeed in the kibble! Scroll down to learn more about SCAA's "Grand Dame" Snowy and her "senior" canine friend Bitsy's successful adoption stories!

On a fostering note, we'd like to pass along a warm thank you to all our potential foster homes out there. We've received an overwhelming amount of offers for kitty foster homes this spring, so much that we can't fill them fast enough – a 'good problem' for sure. Thanks so much for your patience. With kitten season in our midst, your time will come soon enough!

And last but certainly not least, it's been three years and counting! Our annual art contest returns once again this year with a tasty BBQ twist! And no longer just for the kiddies, we're calling critter-inspired artists of all ages to pick up a pen, crayon, or charcoal…whatever inspires you to share your talent with the masses. We can't wait to see your masterpieces!

Foster care profile: Luke and Leia

Each month, SCAA will feature the investment needed to get some of our many foster animals healthy and adoptable. As financial times get tough for everyone, we hope this feature not only accounts for where donations are going, but underscores the critical need for the donations we request on foster care intake and adoption.

Luke and Leia are adorable siblings found abandoned in a rubbish bin when they were hours old. Since their rescue in November, volunteers have devoted countless hours to bottle feeding and then medicating both kittens whose immune systems were severely compromised. Thanks to foster parents, PAW, and SCAA, these exceptionally lovely (and exceptionally sickly!) little fighters are on their way to being adoptable and getting the happily ever after they deserve.

Donations
Foster care intake donation from rescuer RMB 500
(future) adoption donation(s) from adopter(s) RMB 1,000
Medical care expenses
Including multiple health checks; flea and worm treatment, PAW boarding and care; antibiotics for urinary tract infections; FIV and FeLV tests; and vaccinations RMB 3,611 (Luke)
RMB 1,769 (Leia)
- RMB3,880

Something(s) in Common - SCAA's Grand Dames (finally) Find Great Homes

Bitsy

At first glance, 8-year-old Persian cat Snowy from New York and a 10-year-old Australian Silk Terrier Bitsy from Sydney might not seem to have a lot in common. But Snowy's and Bitsy's SCAA stories are virtually parallel in many ways: from frustratingly long foster care to finally getting their happily ever after with great adopters.

Both "senior" pampered pets display a definite lady-like demeanor (i.e. demanding and set in their ways!); they were left behind in Shanghai as owners moved to places that do not allow the direct import of pets from China; and they were each cared for by dedicated SCAA foster parents for a long time (Snowy for nearly one year and Bitsy for two years). Snowy and Bitsy couldn't seem to catch a break with adopters – despite the newsletter profiles and director and foster parent testimonials. It is certainly tough competing for your happily ever after with younger, smaller, and more easily and readily handled kittens and puppies!

Thanks to two families who saw these companion animals' potential as relaxed (old age slows us all down!) and loyal pets, these two lovely ladies have each found the great adoptive homes they deserve. Snowy could not be more pampered by her family – a retired couple able to devote the time and attention to simply admiring Snowy as she expects them (and indeed all of us!) to do, although she is apparently not pleased about sharing some attention with her new parents' pet tortoise. Bitsy is one lucky little canine to have found avid dog lovers as enamored with her big attitude as SCAA is. Bitsy continues to prove old dogs do learn new tricks – she even welcomed a little foster kitten friend into her space over the holidays, probably because she is smart enough to have known it was a temporary arrangement!
