Introduction:
Ah, summer is just about upon us….thanks to so many of you for coming to our 13 June meeting considering that most of our members have returned to their home country for the next three months. We had over 30 people attend, but this is less than half our normal numbers, which means half our regular funds raised. PLEASE, please come to our July/August meetings if you are in Shanghai…every yuan counts!
On the other hand, we have many thank yous to say for some incredible fundraising this past month (see our individual donations for more details!). Special thanks to Kate DuClos, SAS 12th Graders, Alex Chua and Newport Reality and Alexis/Graham Gardiner for their generous donations and hard work! These additional funds from heaven will help us get through the ex-pat absent summer months which, unfortunately, does not mean any lessening of abandoned kittens, cats, puppies and dogs!
Unfortunately, we have also witnessed the death of four kittens within two weeks. It’s a terrible trauma for our foster parents who are holding the little ones as they pass away, but it’s a reality we have to deal with that we cannot save every kitten or puppy, especially the tiny ones that are only a couple of weeks old. We can only take comfort in knowing that these little ones have been rescued and the last few weeks or days of their lives have been filled with full tummies, lots of purrs and tail wagging and so much love from our passionate foster parents.
And, finally, Baoshan has moved!! Although still not completely finished, we expect that this new facility will be so much better for the animals’ welfare (two steps forward, three steps back and perhaps a few more steps forward now?!). Hopefully, by autumn, we’ll not only be able to watch the dogs run freely in the facility’s courtyard but all the animals will be more comfortable in larger rooms (with an isolation room!) and we humans can enjoy picnics, long walks with the dogs, etc. etc.!! What is most amazing is that we currently have 53 of Baoshan’s animals in foster care and have adopted out over 100 of their animals…(not to mention all the other animals we have rescued and re-homed!)….we are all grateful to our dedicated foster parents who have made these rescues possible….summer is here, people are traveling and returning home, and we are overwhelmed with abandoned animals….if you can foster, even for a few days, call us, and tell everyone you know that we desperately need foster parents.
To all of our SCAA members, happy, healthy summer and to our dedicated foster parents who come through over and over and over again, our deepest thanks as ever.
Warmest regards,
Carol A. Wolfson
Founder/Executive Director, SCAA.

News Update
- Ultimate Frisbee Tournament: This was a big success, with over RMB 10,000 raised, half of which is being donated to SCAA. A participant from Hong Kong, has stated that he would like to anonymously match the funds we have received which is fantastic. Thanks to SCAA member and foster parent Kate DuClos for spearheading and organizing this event for us!
- Adoption Day: Our record number of adoptions took place last summer with 14 adoptions in one day; we almost reached this amount at our 11 June adoption day at O’Malley’s with 10 adoptions (many people had been waiting for kittens and puppies!). We will be having several additional adoption days throughout the summer so check out our event’s calendar to see which is next and where (volunteers always needed!).
- AGS Four Winds Contact: GM Keith Ellis has appointed one of his managers, Theresa Xie, as the head of their pet relocation department. For any pet transportation questions you might have, please contact her at:
theresa.xie@agsfourwinds.com +86 13916105320
- Animals Asia Foundation “Don’t Eat Me” Information Packs!: We have recently provided the Shanghai branch of Roots & Shoots with 3,000 dog/cat “Don’t Eat Me” information packs which will be distributed in over 130 local schools in the autumn. These informational packs are written in Chinese, with brochures about dog/cat animal care, a CD, bi-lingual hand-out cards about not wearing fur and a great bi-lingual bumper sticker that says “Friends….or Food?”….if you’d like to receive these for school projects, or distribution in the local community, call Carol at 13817811443!

Project Updates
- Baoshan: Baoshan has moved! It’s still a mess, but the animals have been transferred and we are hoping that they will be much happier in this new facility. There is a huge problem with mosquitoes currently, but hopefully with a few bug zappers and proper netting this can soon be fixed. We will soon be giving all the animals their second yearly vaccinations (and first for newly arrived animals) and we are down to about 30 cats (after taking out over 25 kittens in the last two months) and five dogs. Long may it last. Hopefully by autumn, the facilities will be well settled and landscaping done, which would indeed make the place a joy to visit and watch the dogs run freely in their new large yard area, as well as take them for walks in the pedestrian park next door. The Baoshan management has promised to strictly adhere to our isolation room practices for newly arrived animals and to drastically decrease the number of animals they allow in (we won’t hold our breath). As it is, we have recently taken out so many animals that we currently have 53 of Baoshan’s animals in our foster care; this is just too many as it means we have NO spare foster parents available for emergencies and many are providing homes for 4-5 animals….which is a clear and desperate call for MORE foster parents! If you are able to be a foster parent for any length of time at all, please contact Foster Care Director Lee-Anne Armstrong at 13472506615.
