Dear SCAA Community,

The folks and supporters of SCAA have been busy little bees these past months with late April's Annual Art Contest, Shanghai's yearly Earth Day gathering and our 4th anniversary celebration last week at Lushan's newest digs. Phew! Scroll down for event highlights and as always, stay tuned for more upcoming animal-loving get-togethers.

Shanghai's rainy season is upon us, and unfortunately along with this month's heavy drizzles come equally heavy foster challenges. With currently 46 foster cats and kittens under our care, our fostering and adoption resources are extremely limited for the upcoming months, a usual predicament due to summer travels. Keen to help out a rescued kitty or provide a good permanent home? Please don't hesitate. Contact us at foster@scaashanghai.org today!

Please note that unfortunate technical issues have left our pet gallery temporarily disabled. But no need to get those whiskers in a twist! All of our adoptable cats and dogs can be currently viewed online via our new Second Chance Animal Aid Shanghai page on FACEBOOK. Don't forget to check in during your next social surf, and of course, become our latest fan!

To those of you leaving us this summer, travel safely and hope to see you back again at this fall's Animal Lovers Mixer!

With purrrfect regards,
Stephanie Thomas

One Tasty and Artistic Blast!

SCAA's 3rd Annual Art Award Ceremony

The SCAA 2009 Art party was one fantastic gathering of art and animal lovers alike, where the area's budding artists proudly showcased their views on 'what cats and dogs need most!'

Thanks to all who came out. And to our sponsors, we couldn't have done it without you:

The Coop, whose awesome animal crafts were a hit with kids young and old, our long-time supporter Lushan, whose generous donations 'framed' the winners' work in style, and last but certainly not least, our host Café Du monde who served up purrrrrfectly tasty hot dogs and beignets with a piñata to boot!

THREE CHEERS FOR ANOTHER PURRRRRFECTLY
SUCCESSFUL ADOPTION!

Adult cat adoption success: Purrl the purring cat

Purrl playing

Cat Stats:
Name: Purrl
Age: Approx. 1 year
Rescue: Found sitting by her rescuer's front door, her pretty white coat almost unrecognizable under a layer (or two) of dirt.
Temperament: Affectionate, curious, and social.
Funny habit: Purring almost all the time! The smallest gesture (e.g. simply making eye contact) gets her started and going for a while.
Status: Adopted

Potential adopters sometimes need convincing about the rewards of adopting an adult cat. With many tiny kittens tugging at people's heartstrings, it can be easy to overlook the benefits adopting a proven pet – but cat owners will readily tell you, there's just more to love in a bigger model!

Purrl's story from rescue to adoption is a remarkably short one: her foster parents simply couldn't bear to part with her when they heard that a family was considering adopting Purrl.

Purrl's rescue

Purrl's rescuer came home from work one night and saw her patiently sitting by the front door, watching neighbors come and go and looking for someone to take her in. Possibly ones of the dirtiest white cats ever seen, it's no surprise most people were not keen to reach out and give Purrl a head rub! Purrl's rescuer approached her tentatively, expecting this new cat to make a mad dash across the yard and into the bushes, but instead Purrl quickly came forward and flopped on her back for some tummy rubs. It was an easy decision to pick her up and bring her inside.

Once inside, Purrl started purring and basically hasn't stopped for long ever since. Her foster cat name may not have been highly imaginative, but it was certainly very fitting.

A model foster cat

Purrl adjusted to her new foster home as quickly as she had made the transition from street life to the great indoors. She was happiest when her foster parents pet her, brushed her, and otherwise lavished attention on her. In between all this attention and more purring of course, Purrl could be found in her favorite spot: the window seat overlooking the bird-filled tree outside.

Happily ever after

Purrl's foster parents were initially unsure of adopting a pet and considered fostering a great way to enjoy animal companionship while helping a needy rescue. They readily admitted they would miss Purrl terribly when she would eventually find a home. However, the prospect of a new family wanting to meet Purrl several weeks later had her foster mom in tears. Purrl was already a much-loved part of their family. She is now affectionately known as Xiao Wang.

Foster care profile: Angel

Each month, SCAA will feature the investment needed to get just one of our many foster animals healthy and adoptable. As financial times get tough for everyone, we hope this feature not only accounts for where donations are going, but underscores the critical need for the donations we request on foster care intake and adoption.

Angel

Angel is a lovely blue-eyed, white female around 8 months old. Rescued after being trapped in a basement and nearly starved to death, she is now happily settled into a comfortable and loving foster home where she can usually be found cuddling by her foster parents, looking for head rubs, or watching the fish tank.

Donations
Foster care intake donation from Angel's rescuer RMB 500
(future) Adoption donation from Angel's adopterss RMB 500
Medical care expenses
Including health checks, flea & worm treatment, vaccinations, spaying, and FIV & FeLV tests RMB 1,626
- RMB 626
