  INTRODUCTION

Dear SCAA Community,

Thanks to all who came out to this weekend's rainy Adoption Day. The drizzly skies couldn't keep the crowds away with four felines, including one adult kitty, leaving for a forever home!

As you'll read below, sadly kitten season has arrived full force. We can't thank enough our generous army of foster and adoptive parents out there who've braved shy little souls, from emotional recovery to round-the-clock bottle feeders. We also wish to pay tribute to those who make that extra effort to help animals in need, if even making their lives a bit more comfortable.

And tick, tock... our annual art event is literally just around the corner, so be sure to join us this Saturday afternoon for a delicious end to this year's artsy array. It's not too late to pick and bid on your favorite critter-inspired creations, remaining on display at Café du Monde right up until the big event. See you there!

Spring kitten boom finds SCAA short of foster homes

As the warm, sunny weather last week ushered in spring, a less welcome sign of the season also arrived – the abandonment of unwanted newborn kittens. 9 babies, all less than 2 weeks old, were found in various locations last week.

Some were left out on the street in a box, while others found in rubbish bins. No matter the circumstance of abandonment, it is a major challenge to keep them alive as they require bottle feeding around-the-clock for several weeks.

Kitten Yoga and Kungfu
Kitten Yoga (white Tabby) was found screaming for food all by himself on the side of a busy road. He is eating well and energetically trying to climb everything in his foster home. Kitten Kungfu was not as fortunate. She was rescued from a rubbish bin and struggled to eat and suffered from low energy for days before dying at 3AM Wednesday, in the hands of her caregiver.

SCAA needs more foster parents who are able to bottle feed abandoned kittens. Bottle feeding is extremely rewarding but also time consuming and exhausting. The low survival rate of abandoned newborns means fostering them can also be an emotional experience. It requires feeding kittens every 2 to 4 hours (depending on age), toileting, keeping them warm, and monitoring for signs of illness and going to PAW as needed.

Volunteers able to bottle feed should please contact Lee-Anne at foster@scaashanghai.org. The commitment needed from any new volunteer is minimum 4 weeks or until kittens are fully weaned - this is because no other homes would be available for the kittens should a foster parent change their mind.

SCAA would like thank those foster parents bottle feeding at this time. We wish you best of luck and hope you can catch up on sleep in a few weeks!

April: Adult Cat Adoption Month

Ginger Cat and Girl
SCAA adopted cat Apricot: a big cat with a big heart appreciates his second chance.

What's not to love about a proven pet? Please help SCAA spread the word about the benefits of adopting a happy and healthy adult cat.

SCAA is calling on adopters to share their adult cat adoption story: why chose to adopt a "big cat"? What makes your pet an amazing adult cat?

Please send your story (max. 300 words) and a picture of your amazing adult cat to foster@scaashanghai.org to contribute to a special adult cat adoption campaign.

Note: SCAA does not publish or post photos of people without their express permission. We will attribute your contributions on a first-name basis.

Foster care profile: Lizzy

Lizzy

Each month, SCAA will feature the investment needed to get just one of our many foster animals healthy and adoptable. As financial times get tough for everyone, we hope this feature not only accounts for where donations are going, but underscores the critical need for the donations we request on foster care intake and adoption.

Lizzy is a loyal and loving young dog that SCAA took into care from a local animal hoarder over 1 year ago, when she was just a tiny and vulnerable puppy. Her immune system compromised from a hoarding environment, Lizzy was treated for skin problems and infections for several months before she was officially "adoptable". She has impressed dedicated foster parents who have earned her trust and SCAA is hoping to find her the good, permanent home she deserves soon.

Donations
Foster care intake donation from Lizzy's rescuer ZERO (from hoarder)
(future) Minimum adoption donation from Lizzy's adopters RMB 500
Medical care expenses
Including multiple health checks, flea and worm treatment, treatment for skin fungus, spaying RMB 6,888
- RMB 6,388

Donations

Many thanks to our generous donors:

  • Judy Sharp - dog food, shampoos and medication
  • Branch Johnson – dog cage and supplies
  • Cici - pet food for project animals
  • Wendi Ayer - large dog kennel crate for project dogs
  • Louise Salter - RMB300 for project animals

And a big thanks to SCAA volunteer Vivian Chen and friends (a.k.a. rescuers of foster kitty Picasso), who've been holding a donation drive at SAS Puxi's campus this spring. We can't wait to see the results!

Wow! Spreading the word across campus!

The Story of Bitsy

Bitsy

It was a dusky June morning when my husband Harco and I picked up Bitsy from her foster family. Before arriving, we'd read through her info from SCAA's website and were prepared to meet up with a difficult little terrier with a strong, dominant character. It wasn't love at first sight. As one who had grown up with dogs, I had had a handful of experience and could tell that she was definitely neither an easy-going 'little sweetie' nor an unintelligent 'little dumbo'.

On the ride back, she crawled to me and settled herself on my lap, watching cars moving by. At home, she stayed quietly in her basket and did nothing more than eat, walk and sleep, not playing with a single toy - quite unusual for a terrier!

Things seemed to go well until one day we noticed a tear rolling down her cheek..... she looked so sad. At that moment, we realized that Bitsy was a little terrier with a human soul, what the Dutch call a 'human dog'. The more we got to know her, the more we realized how many emotions she carried with her. An elderly dog being left in an unknown land after living with her first owner for 7 years, not knowing why she was left behind. As a small dog with strong character, she must has gone through a lot, and only God knows what sort of suffering she endured over the past 2 years. Her foster homes were loving and caring, but she was still haunted by her old memories.

An incident happened later on explaining that:
One sunny summer evening, during our usual afternoon walk, an Australian family walked past us. Bitsy noticed their Australian accent and kept her ears up watching them walking all the way down to the end of the street. She just stood there quietly. She cried a little and continued walking home with me.

I really felt sorry for her, especially when I heard that she was actually rescued by SCAA and started her foster life with nothing! How could one feel being left alone in a strange environment with not even a single piece of personal belongings to continue life with? Surely it was a very traumatizing experience for her......

After a couple of months, Bitsy started to play with a woolen flower from one of my sweaters, and came to us more and more for attention. Then I realized that the main reason Bitsy didn't play with any toys was simply because she felt insecure and was unable to relax.

I was still not sure if she feels at home with us until one fine day she started barking at me, hurrying me up to bring her out for her daily walk! A bond is slowly growing between Bitsy and us. We wanted to adopt her but the first thing we need to check out is if we are able to bring her away when we move out from China. Bitsy doesn't deserve to be abandoned again in her life. Last November, after asking around and gathering all the information, we asked to adopt Bitsy officially from SCAA. In 2009 January, we applied for her dog license. The Shanghai police were very helpful during the application procedure. Two days ago, police station rang us up to inform us that the license was ready for pick up anytime!

I understand that it would not be easy to explain to Bitsy that she is our family member now and this would be her permanent home. But she will learn that slowly and we will gradually gain her full trust. Seeing her greeting us with her affectionate big eyes every morning makes my day.

As a Buddhist, I believe that every thing that happens in life for a reason. One of the main reasons for us to move to Shanghai was so that Bitsy could join us in life. So, Bitsy, welcome home!
