  INTRODUCTION

Dear SCAA Community,

The fall season is in full swing but before we break out those long johns and space heaters, there's still a bit more sunshine to soak up (Adoption Days on O'Malley's roof-top patio is a good start). As the onset of another frigid Shanghai winter approaches, we're always in need of foster parents to move Shanghai's needy stray and abandoned companion animals off the streets, out of our local project and into warm loving homes. Keen to help out? Contact foster@scaashanghai.org today!

The folks at SCAA have been super busy preparing for this fall's events and our volunteers' never-ending time and generosity have definitely left a wagging tail or two. Our weekend at Shanghai's Expat Show was a total success, where over RMB3,500 was raised in 2009 calendar, pet toy and SCAA product sales. A big thanks to our volunteers for their time and efforts!

The crazy cat lady who started it all, our founder Carol Wolfson will be back in town later this month offering up more generous proceeds for SCAA from Lushan's 'gorgeous goodies' sale. And of course, last, but definitely not least... that's right folks... another year has already passed and it's officially bachelor season once again! In just a few weeks, we'll be lining up 20 of Shanghai's finest animal-loving gentlemen and all for the best of critter causes. So start warming up your wallets ladies and be sure to spread the word for October's hottest and spiciest event!

Warmest regards,

Stephanie Thomas

The Charitable Minded Corporation Trend Continues!

Fedex
Last month in the spirit of ‘FedEx Cares Week', several volunteers paid a special visit to Mr. Huang's getting a bit down and dirty for a good cause! Huang's cats and dogs, always keen for company, received their visitors with enthusiasm and were happy for the extra attention and most of all, brushings! The team was impressed by Mr. Huang's dedication to his animals and may be returning for future visits. On behalf of all the cats and dogs at Mr. Huang's, we send the folks at FedEx their purrrrrrrrfect regards (and an honorary ‘woof' of course)!

Finding a box full of babies

While many of us readily accept an occasional kitten rescue interrupting our summer holidays, it's hard to imagine stumbling across 7 abandoned newborns in a cardboard box during an innocent stroll through the garden. One kind animal lover did just that in July and since then, he has been a very busy and somewhat sleep-deprived rescuer!

The seven kittens had been in their cardboard box for at least 24 hours without any food by the time their rescuer found them. They were so small that they fit in the palm of his hand and their eyes and ear canals were firmly sealed shut.

After organizing healthy kitten formula and a few bottles, so that other family members could pitch in at feeding time, which was every couple of hours around-the-clock, vet care became top priority as some kittens struggled more than others. To help keep track of the sickest kittens, the litter received their "colorful" names and each one was outfitted with a makeshift color-coded yarn collar. It was a while before the kittens became distinguishable otherwise!

Ginger Kittiies
Where does one begin and the other end?

Four weeks from bottle to bowl!

Amazingly, the seven kittens beat the odds and thrived on their formula and all the love and attention showered on them. It was definitely an uphill battle for little Orange in particular, who was so dehydrated that his rescuer "needed to force-feed him water every 30 minutes for a day and then every hour for another". After a long month of bottle feeding, all the kittens were busy devouring kitten tuna and kibble – 5 dozen packs of kitten tuna and 3 bags of dry food in their first two weeks on solid food alone!

The search for new homes begins

As the kittens were weaned and they developed boundless energy and curiosity, they began taking over their rescuer's home – a ginger invasion of sorts! Thankfully, foster homes became available to help out and now several of the kittens have easily adjusted to new foster families and cat friends. The kittens even kept their peculiar habit of sitting on their favorite person's head or in their hair!

All the kittens have been treated for fleas, mites, worms and have received at least a first vaccination. They will be charming their way into adoptive homes starting Sunday 12 October.

HEY YOU! DON'T THROW THAT AWAY!

Huang's dogs
Some of Mr. Huang's canine residents.

Well, as the saying goes, "One man's trash is 180+ critters' treasure." Hmmm... well perhaps not, but for the cats and dogs at Mr. Huang's, any extra shelter is always welcome. We at SCAA and our kind sponsors do our best to keep Huang's precious furries as comfortable as possible, but anyone who knows Shanghai's biting winter temps can appreciate the value of an extra blankie or two.

Enter our dedicated volunteers led by foster Mom and 'Sewer Extraordinaire' Angeline! This devoted dog-loving bunch will be creating an 'extra blankie' of sorts - a one-of-its-kind recycled covering for Mr. Huang's outdoor dog area providing our canine friends a bit more comfort during the wet and chilly winter months. But, of course they need your help to make this happen!

What's needed:

  • Old jeans
  • Umbrellas
  • Tents (basically any sturdy and weather-proof material you no longer need)

Collections will begin at this Sunday's Adoption Day on Oct 12th and will continue throughout the month. From November on, Angeline and her team of volunteers (dog and cat lovers alike) will join in on an afternoon or two of critter-inspired sewing! Any volunteers out there specifically talented with the needle? Your efforts will be most welcome!

So before you hit the bin, STOP! And donate your goods instead to another great SCAA cause! Who knew that your trash could make such a warm and comfy treasure after all? Contact volunteer@scaashanghai.org today for more details!
