Dear SCAA Community,

With the crisp weather upon us, we hope you have a warm, comfortable place to relax and wish you luck in claiming it before your feline and canine companions do!

November is a time for SCAA to celebrate the recent success of our 3rd Annual SCAA Bachelor Auction and to gear up for our Christmas gala on December 9th. We're looking forward to an evening filled with fantastic raffle prizes, good food, and live music. We need your support - eating, drinking, and buying a chance to win 5-star hotel stays, as these two "people-friendly" SCAA events are the main source of funding to get us through the leaner winter months ahead.

With many families preparing for a few weeks of well-deserved vacation, adoptions have started to slow down. Undeterred, some of our longest-fostered animals like cat Snowy (profiled below) and dog Lizzie hope that people take this time to think about pet ownership and come see them at Adoption Day when the time is right. In the meantime, purchasing a 2009 SCAA calendar highlighting our happily adopted animals is a great way to show your support.

As always, our gratitude goes out to community-minded sponsors, generous donors and dedicated volunteers and foster parents (especially during this ringworm season!).

I look forward to seeing you all in December!

Foster Care Director

Kids for Critters Crusade!

The charitable-minded trend travels once again down to Minhang with SAS students Samantha Ng and Ann Lei! Taking time out of their already jam-packed schedule, these purrrfectly benevolent 7th graders not only organized, but designed their very own customized line of t-shirts and bags for SCAA! The girls then used their proceeds from both school and compound sales to purchase loads of dog and cat goodies for Shanghai's critters in need!  Many thanks girls for all of your hard work and generosity!

CATTY NEWS…

SCAA's Adorable Adult Cat - Snowy

Cat Stats:
Name: Snowy
Age: 7.5 years
Pedigree: Persian (from New York City)
Temperament: Very lady-like! Snowy is calm, quiet, and poised.  She demands fresh food and water and accepts human admirers.
Status: In SCAA foster care for many months now; looking for a quiet and relaxing permanent home

Snowy
If this comfy spot is good enough for people, it's good enough for Snowy

The high life from New York to Shanghai... and your home next?

Snowy, our Persian princess, is an unusually sophisticated and pampered foster cat - no near death experiences on cold, dark and dangerous streets for her. But Snowy shares a common bond with other SCAA foster cats: she has been struggling to find a special person willing to give an adult cat a good permanent home.

Snowy moved from New York to Shanghai with her doting owner, but she was unfortunately not up for the minimum 6 months in transit (with quarantine) required to move again when her owner relocated to Taiwan, one of a few countries that does not accept any animals directly from China. Snowy is in excellent health and there is every reason to expect her to continue gracing a new home with her presence for another 7+ years to come.

The search for a new home and admirers

Snowy believes in energy conservation - her own energy that is!  She is most often found lounging on the bed, the sofa, a comfortable rug, or pillow.  The occasional kitten-like burst can be summoned when foster parents break out the laser pen. Snowy greets visitors and adjusts to new environments well.  She enjoys hanging out near her “people” and (thankfully) enjoys being brushed.    Snowy even accepts a light shower & rinse every once in a while to keep her bright white, but she does not like being picked up or held for very long.

Not surprisingly, Snowy does not enjoy her frequent trips to Adoption Day.  The noise, crowds and attention from strangers make her nervous.  Snowy was de-clawed (years ago by her owner), so she sometimes snaps at people because her usual defenses have been taken away.  She prefers to make friends at her own pace and once she trusts you, she is a happy and secure pet around the house.

Snowy Snowy
Snowy in a familiar pose... ...or two

Snowy is vaccinated and spayed and has had full blood work (all normal). Snowy dislikes vet visits and may require house calls or sedation on future care. Foster parents are available to introduce potential adopters to Snowy at home where she is comfortable. For information on meeting Snowy, please email Lee-Anne at foster@scaashanghai.org

When hurricane Hannah separated two white tigers from their mother, Anjana came to the Rescue. Anjana, a chimp at TIGERS in South Carolina, became surrogate mom and playmate to the cubs, even helping with bottle feeding, (according to The Sun). But here's the truly amazing part - Anjana does this all the time, having raised leopard and lion cubs.
