  INTRODUCTION
sp
Dear SCAA Community,

Welcome to our monthly email newsletter. It's been a busy couple of months with many adoptions and successful events. A big thanks to all our volunteers for your animal rescue efforts and everyone who came out and supported our events. I hope to see you all again at next week's Christmas Gala and wish you a very happy holidays!!

As you'll read below, we're pleased to report our hoarder project is progressing nicely and starting from 2008, we hope to be able to take along volunteers. Please let me know if you'd be interested because there are so many kitties in need of your attention and love! In the meantime, we are in desperate need of donations of food, litter and warm bedding. If you're planning on a pre-holiday or early spring cleaning, keep us in mind before throwing way any old clothes (especially sweaters) towels and bedding. Even old chairs, scratch posts and cabinets are great for keeping a stimulated environment. Kitty toys are most welcome too!

As winter sets in and the mercury begins to dip, always remember to protect your animal companions. In fact, this onset of harsh winter weather highlights yet another good reason to always keep your pet indoors. Protect your furry friends from the dangers of traffic, infectious disease and deliberate acts of animal cruelty by keeping them safe and warm inside! And of course, always make sure they have a warm place to sleep off the floor and away from drafts.

Before you pack up or jump on that plane, DON'T FORGET this coming Tuesday's 3rd annual SCAA Christmas Gala! Start the holiday season off in style with one amazing selection of raffle prizes (see listing above) and 200 loaded goodie bags leaving no one going home empty-handed. O'Malley's will once again be serving up a tasty spread of comfort food and Carol has thrown in a free glass of Champagne on entry as a thank you to you all. Loads of entertainment will be on hand including a special appearance from the Beatles and the top ten funniest videos of 2007! This is one holiday party you won't wanna miss. Be sure to bring your friends to eat, drink, be merry, win big!!! and support SCAA- all at once!

This SCAA Christmas Gala will also be SCAA founder Carol Wolfson's last hurrah before moving to Kuala Lumpur. Although, as Carol says, “it's not really good-bye but simply a longer commute”, and she will continue to advise from afar and return for major SCAA events. Nonetheless, she's hoping all our dedicated volunteers and supporters come out and say a semi-farewell to her and hubby at their final fundraiser of 2007! For three years, Carol has tirelessly built up SCAA to the amazing organization that it is today. Carol's true dedication, generosity and spirit will be sorely missed. We wish her great success and a purrrfect future in KL!

Warmest Regards,

Milton Menefee

New SCAA Dog Adoption Program
(by Lee-Anne, Animal Ops Director )

As dog licencing laws and ownership restrictions have continued to tighten, SCAA has changed the way it helps dog/puppy rescuers find good permanent homes for their rescues.

We no longer place unlicensed dogs in foster care, but will continue contributing financially to population control (spey / neuter), using donations from dog and cat adopters as well as from SCAA supporters at our regular events.

Here are some brief highlights of the new rescued dog re-homing program:

Dog rescuer responsibilities:

  • care for their rescued dog/puppy until adoption
  • take legal responsibility for licensing (or not doing so!)
  • provide necessary medical care (a min. RMB500 spent means no further donation to SCAA)
  • spey or neuter if age appropriate
  • attend SCAA Adoption Days

SCAA responsibilities:

  • arrange an initial discounted vet visit
  • post dog's story and photos on website adoption gallery
  • reimburse the rescuer for the costs of spey/neuter on the adoption through SCAA

To learn more about dog adoption services please read our updated Found an Animal page.

Recent Dog Rehoming Success Stories
(by Jaycee Chan, Dog Adoption Director)

  • Susie aka Maple was taken from Mr. Huang's at Baoshan - a small project SCAA supports every month with supplies of medicine, toys and cat litter. She has been spayed and adopted by a loving home. Her new parents adore her.
  • Keylo and Kay also came from Mr. Huang’s. Found healthy, clean and well cared for by their care taker, they have also been adopted. Their mother is still currently at Baoshan.
  • MaoMao, a 3-legged Golden Retriever, was our most recent dog that needed a home. She was found with one leg amputated and abandoned in front of a pet shop. The rescuer posted her picture locally for two months to find her a home, but contacted us after having no success. After going through the same process as other rescuers (paying for check-ups, vaccinations and approval from PAW), she was ready for adoption- and adopted she was! Her new family loves her dearly.
  • Didi came from a loving rescuer’s home, who unfortunately was extremely busy and needed to find him a home as soon as possible. Having saved many dogs over the years, helping Didi to move on and finding him a new home only made sense. Being a PAW's patient made this process all the easier. He has also been adopted.
  • Robbie is a Cocker Spaniel mix, whose parents were leaving Shanghai and only able to take one dog. After going through our SCAA process, he was finally ready for Adoption Day. He has also been adopted and is very happy with his new family.
  • Shan Shun was found abandoned with an eye infection and was brought in by her rescuer, a vet who could not fix the problem. She called asking for help and was referred to PAW. After a few checks and an eye operation, from which she has fully recovered, Shan Shun is doing well and has also been adopted into a loving home.

Success Story, Jay the Cat

Jay Jay the Cat
Jay was found seriously injured and starving to death in a downtown garden. A considerable amount of medical care, foster parent dedication and the kindness of a 9-year-old cat lover provided Jay with a remarkable second chance.

Hoarder Project Update

Cats

On 1 November, SCAA Founder Carol Wolfson, Dog Foster Care Director Jaycee Chan and Vice-Director Sonny Gao, visited our SCAA hoarder project and are extremely pleased to report that the hoarder (who will remain nameless so that other hoarders don't try to give him more animals knowing SCAA is assisting), has continued to follow all of the SCAA guidelines. SCAA at City Weekend Family Day

SCAA City Weekend Family Day

SCAA sponsor City Weekend generously provided SCAA with a booth at its CW Family Day in Pudong on October 20th. Volunteers and SCAA directors were on hand to talk to families interested in fostering or adopting SCAA animals.

Family Day offered us the chance to sell our new 2008 SCAA Calendar and promote upcoming events as well as to teach some children about cat care and handling pets. During her visit, an SCAA supporter and owner of two Ragdolls (kitties well-known for their relaxed temperament and often used in pet education and pet therapy programs) delighted kids with her two very fluffy cats.

A special thanks to CW for the opportunity to raise SCAA's profile in the growing family communities around Jinqiao and supporting us with 10% of ticket sales.

SCAA’s 2nd Annual Bachelor Auction Returns With A Bang!

Bachelor Auction

On 20 October the party was on and even some was coming off at Vinyl Studio as critter lovers galore gathered for one unforgettable evening of harmless flirtation, generosity and oh-so-much fun!

The festivities warmed up with an on-entry sparkling in stocking feet followed by delicious Da Marco dishes and open bar featuring Solid Vodka. City Weekend’s MC Dan Ouyang started the bids as a most enthusiastic audience singled out the hunk-of-their-choice for one fabulous cause!

The diverse selection of Shanghai's spiciest, twenty one in all, strutted and sashay’ed the catwalk like nobody’s business performing a variety of stunts ranging from Elvis and animal impersonations to private serenades having the ladies literally giggling into their Cosmos!

Professional pole dancer Chris Measday stole the show with his no-less-than-awesome pole-dancing performance very much to the delight of his wide-eyed spectators and fellow bachelors alike!

By the evening’s end, the crowd was whooping it up, opening their hearts and wallets to animals in need. The highest bidder each won a 'night out' at one of Shanghai's fine dining venues with their selected bachelor with the top bid of the night going for RMB 3,000!

We would like to thank all the amazing bachelors and our many sponsors including- City Weekend, Vinyl Studio, Da Marco Catering and Lushan Interiors and Framing who made the SCAA Bachelor Auction such a great success! See pictures by Sharron Lovell

Fashion Morning at Carol's

Hosted by Carol with proceeds supporting SCAA, aspiring fashionistas convened in the French Concession for one lively chat with famed designer Yasmin Velloza! From late morning on, wine and pastries kept this modish group of SEA ladies going through discussions of upcoming fashion styles and Yasmin's renowned eco-fabric trends. Additionally, stunning originals from her collection were on sale -fine elegant and eco-friendly textiles (cashmere, bamboo, organic cottons), very soft and feminine pieces perfect for both work and play.

Yasmin is currently doing a fashion shoot in Carol's home for possible issue in a London fashion magazine...stay tuned for updates!

Wolfson/Garvey/SCAA Thanksgiving Bash

Thanksgiving

A few weeks have already passed and some of us are still feeling the tug in our jeans from surely the most happening Turkey Day party in town! Coated in endless glasses of Bailey’s, mouth-watering dishes and ever-flowing wine, it was one tasty event and then some by Shanghai's most famous critter lover aka Hostess Extraordinaire! Live music by DJ Myles kept the tunes happening and even the old farts’ feet tapping late into the night. Great fun for all who came and considerable funds were raised for SCAA. Many thanks to all who attended! Click here to see photos.

  SCAA'S ADORABLE ADULT CATS
sp

Peanut

  • Name: Peanut
  • Age: 1. 5 years
  • Personality: Cuddles and plays with other social cats and enjoys being around people, although needs a short period of adjustment to a new environment.
  • Favorite hangouts: The bed (and in between foster mom’s knees if possible); the sofa next to foster dad; and anywhere a kitten friend is chilling out.
  • Silly habits: picking out the pillow-shaped bits in her big bowl of dry cat food.
  • Health: Vaccinated and spayed. Possibly affected by mild asthma as she can get short of breath when playing. Also has allergies triggered by fresh flowers.
  • Ideal home: A place with a stay-at-home / work-at-home parent and even with older children experienced with pet ownership. Another social cat would be perfect. Other cats bring Peanut out of her shell (ha ha).

Peanut's SCAA story

Peanut has been an SCAA foster cat for over 16 months. She was found abandoned at an SCAA-supported project as a tiny kitten. Her foster mom bottle-fed her and gave her lots of love and attention. At around 8 weeks old, the then tiny Peanut was adopted out to a young couple with an active household environment. Peanut wasn't a great match for this noisier and busier home and so she was returned to SCAA foster care. For months, Peanut would come to Adoption Day and get passed over for younger and smaller kittens. Soon, she became slightly withdrawn and was given a short break to re-gain her confidence.

The extra time with devoted foster parents has paid off and Peanut is now a loving and social girl. She purrs so loudly and get so excited when she sees the people she trusts, that she snorts! With a bit of time and patience, new owners would surely become as attached to Peanut as her foster parents are.

Peanut sometimes wheezes after running around the house with the other cats and sneezes around fresh flowers. She likely has mild asthma and allergies. SCAA is hopeful this is a manageable condition and encourages any interested adopters to contact us for more details. To learn more about Peanut, please contact SCAA Foster Care Director, Lee-Anne Armstrong at foster@scaashanghai.org

Save What's Left

Save What's Left

Once again- this year, the 'Save What's' Left students "trick-or-treated" for animals in Asia. Here is a photo of the children's artwork used to raise funds. We decided to call the project "Trick-or-Treat for the Animals of Asia. The recipients of the change collected were SCAA, Animals Asia, SPCA Hong Kong, Visakha SPCA (India), Soi Dog Foundation (Thailand), Wildlife SOS in New Delhi, and the Korean Dog Foundation. Just going around to each homeroom everyday collecting change, the 'Save What's Left' club was able to send each of the above organizations $50.00. The students, all between the ages of 11 and 13 years, are eager to save what's left of this small world one animal at a time.
