  INTRODUCTION

Dear SCAA Community,

Rainy season is officially here but Shanghai veterans know the hot and muggy days will be back before we know it. The high temps of summer can be a dangerous time for our furry friends so be sure to provide your pet with a constant supply of fresh water, and for those lucky enough to have a garden, a nice cool spot to spend those lazy afternoons. And of course, always watch out for those pesky ticks and fleas!

Sticking around through an even stickier Shanghai summer? With a heavy kitten season and summer travels, our foster homes are dwindling fast, especially for our teeny ones still on the bottle and less healthy friends on the mend. Keen to help out? Scroll down for more details. And be sure to head over to Colabo later this month for one doggone delicious evening al fresco with live entertainment, doggie raffle and hands down the most loyal company around!

For those returning home or leaving us for a spell, travel safely and see you back in the fall for more fabulous SCAA events!

Warm regards,
Stephanie Thomas

Sichuan Earthquake Assistance

Over the past month, we’ve received several emails from concerned animal lovers regarding the plight of cat and dog survivors of the Sichuan earthquake. Although SCAA does not have the capacity itself to be active in the rescue of companion animals in this tragedy’s aftermath, we’ve been keeping up to date with other international organizations. Both the Hong Kong SPCA and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (based in the U.S. with Beijing office) are providing both financial and hands-on rescue operations. For more information on how to assist and donate, please refer to the below links:

The Charitable-Minded Trend Crosses Oceans…

Frontline
Sophia (right) with fellow Frontline contributor

Sophia Schein from New York City recently hosted a very special 9th birthday celebration placing her own wish list aside to help Shanghai’s cat and dogs in need. After receiving an SCAA calendar from auntie and supporter Marcella Loparco and reading about what we do, she immediately wanted to help by hosting her very own Frontline* party. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Sophia and a big thanks to you and your friends for such a thoughtful donation!

Think Big and Hit the Bottle for SCAA

Spring Kitten Season

As spring kitten season and increased local project support collide with foster parent summer vacations, SCAA is desperately short of foster homes for our social adult cats, infectious but affectionate kittens and for needy newborns. Many foster parents have their own healthy pets, so they can't take in sickly kittens or potentially territorial or intimidating adult cats.  Foster parents volunteering their limited time between business meetings are not really able to bottle feed kittens every few hours for weeks on end.

SCAA needs animal lovers without animals to foster some of our bigger, friendly cats and for our infectious but affectionate kittens.  We also need foster parents with a little spare time to foster perennially hungry babies.  If you or any animal lovers you know are able to give a rescued adult cat some much-needed attention, a rescued kitten a bath (for skin fungus) or a newborn a bottle, please contact Lee-Anne at foster@scaashanghai.org

Helping the hardest-to-place and neediest animals is often the most rewarding - without foster parents for them, SCAA cannot accept them into foster care and give them the second chance they deserve.  Without new foster parents to step in as some very dedicated and helpful ones leave Shanghai, a handful of volunteers risk having a house full of animals.  Please get in touch if you have even a few weeks of help to offer during this busy summer season.

Debunking that Age-old Myth: The Story of Sam and Meow

Sam And Meow

Meow or ‘Miao’ was rescued nearly one month ago in an SCAA crazy cat lady garden. After two nights of incessant meowing (hence the name), she was finally lured out of the rain with dinner and into a safe and loving foster home. Although not your typical home for kittens, Meow was welcomed by her new companion Sam, a Bernese Mountain dog, big and fluffy with an even bigger heart and a soft spot for little feline friends.

It took a few days but soon they were sharing water bowls and playing ‘attack’! Outside of chasing string, Sam’s big fluffy tail made the best toy of all! As with any family, there were some disagreements, particularly over who got the chew toy first, but outside of that, Sam and Meow soon became the bestest of friends!
