Dear SCAA Community,

SCAA's dog-friendly dinner and drinks at Colabo in June was a great way to kick off the summer. Thanks to all our supporters who came out to have a good time for a good cause. Feedback from the dogs was overwhelmingly positive, as one owner noted "it's the most fun" her dog has had in Shanghai. Our two-legged friends seemed to enjoy the evening too!

At the height of summer (pun intended), the SCAA team would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about the dangers of open windows and balconies. After a foster cat fell 10 stories - and thankfully survived with only a few bruises and some short-lived anxiety (on both the foster cat and foster mom's part!), we're all reminded of how curious and unpredictable our companion animals can be.

Speaking of summer, the usual holidays combined with the current Chinese visa crisis affecting many of our friends has hit SCAA hard. Unfortunately, we don't have any foster homes for new foster cats and kittens. Rescuers need to foster their own rescues until we can help find a good adoptive home. More volunteers are also needed for several current foster kitties whose foster parents will travel or move soon. A special thanks goes out to those foster parents who are in Shanghai these days: many are going the extra mile for their foster animals, from finding temporary cover or having friends live in their home while they travel, to postponing their quick holiday to Hong Kong. A handful of busy foster parents are even fostering down to the last minute - managing curious kitties while packing up their house for an imminent move. We can't thank you enough.

The SCAA team has a busy summer ahead: organising yearly vaccinations for the 170+ cats and 8 dogs at our local project and managing ongoing donation drives (food, litter, toys and even medicine; welcoming new sponsors on board; and preparing a great 2009 calendar for sale by the time everyone is back this Fall). We hope to see you for some drinks and downtime at the next SCAA monthly gathering at O'Malley's on Tuesday 29 July.

Warmest Regards,

Lee-Anne Armstrong
SCAA Foster Care Director

Support from Abroad: SCAA & HSI

humane

Humane Society International (HSI) runs the international programs of The Humane Society of the United States, a non-profit organisation founded in 1954 and with currently over 10 million members. The private individual who introduced SCAA to the hoarder at our local project has continued to support him after her move to the U.S. She applied for a grant from HSI for the project animals and HSI has generously donated US$500 towards the project. These funds will be used to help with SCAA's monthly US$1000 spent on food, litter and medical care costs. International funding is a rewarding and encouraging milestone for this ongoing local project and SCAA thanks HSI for their contribution and greatly appreciates the efforts by the private individual to organise the grant in the first place.

You can learn more about HSI at http://www.hsus.org/hsi/about_us/

Special Feature: SCAA's Wandering Critters!

One of the most rewarding aspects of SCAA's relatively short time adopting out Shanghai's rescued cats and dogs is seeing the animals fly home with their new family. Pet transport may be an added responsibility, but with a little extra effort, happily ever after is ongoing in other parts of the world for at least twenty-one adopted SCAA cats and five adopted SCAA dogs. Some of our rescued animals are now enjoying life in places like Canada, the U.S., Holland, Germany, Spain, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Whether it's basking in the warm sunshine of Seville or pampering from a doggie day care in Toronto, we look forward to receiving more photos and stories from our animals abroad and wish the same happy ending for our current rescues.

WIls Side Salmon
www.wildsidesalmon.com

SCAA Founder Carol Wolfson's cats have been busy working out sponsorship agreements for SCAA. Both Princess and Pumpkin are quite addicted to Wildside Salmon cat treats that Carol was regularly importing from Seattle. Wildside Salmon were so pleased to hear great feedback on their product and, after learning more about SCAA, are happy to sign on as sponsors, generously donating US$3000 worth of their scrumptious salmon treats. Be on the lookout for these tasty morsels at future SCAA events and adoption days. And a big thanks once again to Rich and Debbie Phillips of Wildside Salmon for generously supporting SCAA's work for stray and abandoned animals in Shanghai.

Stay tuned for more news from the wild side!...
