Introduction:

Happy Summer All (wherever it is!): I am off on a desperately needed vacation, although these days it seems like we all need one! Our foster animals continue to need your help no matter who is on vacation (and it seems many of our foster parents are!), so if you are able to foster an animal, even temporarily, please contact Lee-Anne Armstrong at foster@scaashanghai.org .

We are all sad to say that our moratorium on rescue animal intake continues despite our fantastic 13 adoptions at the 10 June adoption day. We remain overwhelmed with animals and it's simply impossible to take in any more right now. Amazing Jayne Fitton who took in all 17 rescues from the Wong hoarder, is down to 9 after adoptions, but she too is going away for a month and these rascals are coming into my own spare bedrooms, despite my own two very hostile, territorial cats. My Princess has chronic asthma herself and is on meds for the rest of her life, so the stress is not good for her, as it's not for many of our foster parents' own animals, but we simply have no choice. Despite the hotline being turned off, and the website stating very clearly that we cannot take in any more rescues, people continue to call the SCAA directors pleading for us to find foster homes for new rescues (reasons include: having too many fosters themselves, animals who do not accept other animals in their home, allergies, leaving town, etc.). We are all so frustrated having to continue to say no, but we all are making sacrifices, and many foster parents are extremely allergic to animals but find a way to manage, so please, if you rescue an animal, at this time do not call or contact SCAA. There is nothing we can do to assist. Even our own foster parents are finding animals and call a director hoping we can make an exception….this is what got us into this quagmire to begin with….one exception at a time and now we are drowning in kittens and dogs! Even we directors have to walk past strays and we are not making exceptions for anyone, even ourselves! Hopefully, we will continue adopting out many animals in the next month or two and we might be able to start accepting rescues again at the end of the summer.

And, if you find a stray or abandoned animal, please do not individually approach your fellow SCAA foster parents to temporarily house your found animal.  This takes a foster home away from SCAA and is really an indirect way of placing the burden of your new rescue on SCAA animals, who are then left without options they should otherwise have.

On a happier note, we are thrilled to finally be able to introduce a dog trainer to our supporters who may potentially work with SCAA in the future. Edmond Kan, based out of Wuxi, has started a dog training organization called Guai Gou Gou (“good doggie”: www.guaigougou.com.cn ). Edmond has already come to two events to work with some of SCAA's more naughty dogs and within minutes of Edmond taking the lead, we could see marked differences in the dogs' behavior. Wow! Edmond is offering his help to SCAA foster dogs for free and will donate 50% of any fees to SCAA for any business referrals. Thanks so much Ed and Anna!

We had two great events this past month: an adoption and doggy day at the Pudong Moon River Diner and a gourmet, dog friendly, dinner and wine tasting at the Italian restaurant Colabo, both of which were great successes. See SCAA news below for fantastic photos!

We are already revving up preparations for our 2007 SCAA Bachelor Auction (we need bachelors (!!) and 20 dinner voucher sponsorships) and our third annual Xmas gala (again, we hope to have over 100 raffle prizes), so if you can assist with any sponsorship, please contact director@scaashanghai.org.

And, this year we are offering page sponsorships for our upcoming 2008 calendar. Corporations and/or individuals are welcome. See SCAA News for details.

A special thanks to the Robin Bordie, Andy Rothman, Earl, Alice and Daisy family for an amazing donation of US$ 2,000 (via PayPal). This is our largest individual donation to date! Deepest thanks also to Adrienne and Tom Urbanec for their donation of RMB 4,000 (last month they donated RMB 8,000). We are so grateful to both families and to all donors, no matter how large or small: every RMB counts!

Bella Chester

I'll end this newsletter with a kind email sent to us from an Indian medical student in Tianjin. He is graduating in July and desperately wants to take his rescued dog back with him to India but it's proving impossible as he has little funding and the logistics are extremely difficult. We have tried to help him by putting him in touch with the International Fund for Animal Welfare in Beijing as well as with our sponsor AGS Fourwinds Int'l Moving firm. The last note this student wrote to us was:

“It is so nice of u for helping me in this situation. I swear after I will become a good doctor and started making money, I will try my best to raise money for your institution to help people like me. Around 20 websites foundations I have contacted in the past 2 days and only you have helped me. Thank u.”

All of the SCAA directors take great pride in that we reply to every single email we receive and we do our best to do so within 24 hours. Although the number already amounts to a couple hundred emails each day, I personally hope SCAA never gets so big, like so many other international charities, that it will forget that each person, and each animal, counts.

Be sure to join us for every event possible (it will be a bit more quiet this summer as we gear up for our exciting fall events) as we need as much funding and participation as possible to cover our growing vet medical care costs.

Purrfect regards,

Carol Wolfson
Founder/Executive Director

SCAA Adorable Adult Cats: Peanut

Peanut
Peanut

This month's special SCAA cat is Peanut.  Many SCAA foster parents know Peanut and will probably be surprised to see she is still in foster care.  In summer 2006, Peanut was found abandoned at a couple weeks old.  She was bottle fed / hand raised by a dedicated foster mom.  At 8 weeks old, Peanut was adopted out to a good home.  Unfortunately, this new home was too much of a change for the quiet Peanut.  After hiding from her (very) active new family for a week, she was swapped for a more adaptable kitten.

Peanut is a loyal, friendly, playful and sweet cat.  With women that is!  Peanut doesn't seem to like men, regardless of how kind her foster dads have been over the year she's been in care in a few foster homes!

Dedicated foster parents BJ and Meg can attest that Peanut plays well with other cats.  In fact, social cats bring out the best in Peanut and she would continue to thrive in a home with another cat.

Peanut is an ideal cat for the single girl.  She sleeps on the bed, curls up on the sofa near you and enjoys being hand fed treats.

For more information about adopting Peanut, please contact foster@scaashanghai.org

News Update

  • Moratorium on new foster animals continues: Despite the fantastic 13 adoptions at our last adoption day 10 June, we continue to be overwhelmed by the need to juggle so many foster animals while our usual foster parents travel during the summer. One person has up to 11 foster kitties while many have 3-5. And, we simply have no additional available foster homes for dogs at all. Thus, we continue to need to adhere to our temporary policy of not taking in any more rescues. We have had to turn away even our own dedicated foster parents who have found strays in the past few weeks.

As posted on the SCAA website:

May 2007 Notice: SCAA cannot take any new stray and abandoned animals or pets into our foster care program.  We have reached our foster animal limit with over 80 foster cats and kittens and 15 foster dogs.

The hotline service is also temporarily suspended.

Please see our tips for re-homing pets and recommendations for proper veterinary care for any animal you decide to rescue and re-home on your own.  Sorry we can't be of more help at this time.

If you want to foster or adopt an existing SCAA foster animal, we  welcome your email at director@scaashanghai.org or foster@scaashanghai.org !

  • Need 2008 Calendar Sponsors: We are working on the production of our wonderful 2008 SCAA Calendar and this year, to raise extra funds, we are seeking calendar page sponsors. The cost is RMB 1,000 per sponsor and can be corporate or individual. If corporate, the company logo will be printed both on the month page and in a sponsors' list on the calendar. For individuals, a name and dedication will be listed on the chosen month's page. We already have four sponsors, so 8 to go! If you are interested, please contact director@scaashanghai.org. We also then need people and school project groups to sell the calendar so please contact us if you are interested!!
  • Moon River Diner Pudong Adoption/Dog Day ruff success: Over 40 SCAA members, pets and foster dogs came along to our first adoption day in Pudong in over a year. Generously hosted by MRD owner Greg, everyone enjoyed a filling BBQ, free soft drinks and refillable everything. Greg also donated a whopping 70% of the day's profits to help our dogs in need. Thanks so much Greg. We will now wait until the autumn when more expats come back to return to MRD in Pudong and have our next joy-filled dog adoption day! This was also our first visit by dog obedience trainer Edmond Kan and partner Anna of Guai Gou Gou! Edmond and Anna are giving free training services to SCAA foster dogs and will donate 50% of any referral fees to SCAA as well. Thanks Ed and Anna!

  • Fabulous Colabo Dog Friendly Gourmet Dinner: With the weather turning just right at the last minute, nearly 60 people came along to enjoy a fantastic night of gourmet Italian food, unlimited and excellent brand wine flow donated by East Meets West Wines, and live music by the Pilgrims! ( If you need them to play at your gig, contact Noc 13701750526 nocorama@gmail.com )
A good number of the participants were Japanese, who brought along their precious pets and helped donate to make the night a rousing success. Thanks to Colabo management for offering to host this really joyful event and we hope to have another one in the autumn with even more members, friends and dogs joining in!

Project Updates

  • B&Q donates materials to build at Wong Cat Project: B&Q has now donated materials to start building cat walls, climbing areas and cat beds at the Wong 180+ cat project. This will create a more interesting and lively environment for these now-healthier cats. By July we hope to have photos to show you and next we will work on finding sponsorship to make warm cat beds for the winter (any volunteers? Would make a great school project!). If your school, Roots & Shoots group, Girl Scout group or any sewing group might be interested, please contact director@scaashanghai.org

SCAA Upcoming Fundraising Events

  • Possible Cooking Classes in July: We are in the process of arranging a noon-time cooking class with a popular Chinese restaurant. All ingredients will be donated by the restaurant. Entrance fee will be about RMB 150/person, limited class attendance, and all proceeds will be donated to SCAA. Should be a really fun opportunity to learn to cook a few Chinese dishes, eat them and help raise funds for SCAA at the same time! Stay tuned for more details!
  • July SCAA Happy Hour in the works: Although overwhelmed with foster animals, July seems to be a slow month for events for SCAA so we are trying to secure a venue for a mid-July Happy Hour… somewhere cool and dog friendly! Keep checking the SCAA website and we'll send out a separate notice when details are set for both the happy hour and cooking classes. Please send in suggestions if you like events@scaashanghai.org

We have started selling used clothing and shoes...if you are tired of clothes and shoes that you will never wear again (it's so hard to let go, we know) and they are in pristine condition, donate to SCAA and we will sell these items at the GBS flea market and at select adoption days. This is also a good chance to find something "new" and wonderful for your own wardrobe!! (We will collect at monthly meetings, adoption days and at GBS flea market!)
