Dear SCAA Community,

The dog days of summer are indeed here. And for those of us left behind to only dream of exotic travels, no need to fret about those dwindling days of mandatory iced coffee and relaxation (for the lucky ones), think ahead instead to SCAA’s fabulous autumn season full of mixers, calendars and bachelors, oh my!

That’s right. SCAA’s latest and greatest display of the cutest critters around and inspirational rescue stories will soon be ready to grace any worthy surface in your home or office. These gorgeous calendars make fabulous gifts and will be available for sale at all SCAA events or on line via MTO123.com. Interested in selling at your school or office? Contact us via director@scaashanghai.org today!

And what better way to welcome back the revival of Shanghai expat life than over good wine and tasty nibbles? Join fellow animal lovers as we gather once again at this September’s Animal Lovers Mixer to start off the season right! Details just around the bend….

It’s been a tough summer - foster care intake was recently suspended as we reached over 40 cats and kittens in foster care and have much fewer foster parents and adopters than we did at this time last year.  With holiday schedules and many moving on to new expat adventures, SCAA  is always in need of responsible foster parents to help ease the burden of current homes, some already beyond capacity, giving our rescues the love and attention they deserve. To all of our foster parents who’ve helped out during one very tough season, we bid you ‘xie xie’!

Enjoy what’s left of these lazy summer days and see you at Adoption Day this Sunday!

Warmest Regards,
Stephanie Thomas

SCAA Local  Hoarder Project

Just last month, SCAA’s medical team armed with coffee, meds, and an army of volunteers rose at the crack of dawn and headed to Mr. Huang’s on a crucial vaccination visit.

A few wily ones gave them the run-around (literally) but were no match for some very determined volunteers. Only a handful escaped the group’s grasp and in some cases, ayi’s very effective kitty-catching net! In the end, 179 cats were vaccinated and treated with Revolution, a preventative medication for heartworms, fleas, ticks and mites.

More vaccinations will be taking place this fall including vaccination and treatment for Huang’s eight dogs.

A big thanks to PAW’s medical staff and our volunteers for their early-rising efforts and a job well done!  A special thanks again to donors whose generosity covered the RMB10,000+ cost of this visit: Humane Society International (HIS) and dedicated SCAA supporters Tom and Adrienne Urbanec.

Donations of Revolution (box for large dogs) are most welcome to help with ongoing project costs.  Cash donations for this purpose will be used by SCAA to purchase this at cost thanks to PAW.

Animals in Need: Quasimodo needs SCAA’s help - and SCAA needs yours!!

Quasimodo (or “Quasi” as his foster mom affectionately calls him) was rescued by a kind cat lover who was shocked to see him wandering around her garden with is right eye badly injured.  The skin was torn away from his face and the eye clouded over.

It was obvious from one look at Quasi slowly limping around the garden with puss oozing from his eye that he was in pain and frightened.

Quasi was tested for FIV and FeLV, underwent surgery to repair the skin around his eye, was neutered and vaccinated – all thanks to his generous rescuer. Quasi’s initial vet care bills were over RMB2500.

SCAA took Quasi into foster care, where his patient foster mom waited for a slightly traumatized Quasi to befriend her and make himself at home.

After more than a week of hiding, Quasi made a sudden and much welcome turn-around.   Quasi is now inseparable from his foster mom, or at least from the general area around her feet and legs!  She can’t move from the kitchen to the living room without him shadowing her.  On a recent visit with Quasi, SCAA’s foster care director was on the receiving end of much purring, paw kneading and head rubbing (the latter includes wet trousers courtesy of Quasi’s leaky eye).  Unfortunately, this improvement in temperament was not accompanied by a corresponding improvement in Quasi’s health.

Quasi is now suffering from a lingering infection in his wounded eye.  He also has a common skin fungus.  After a recent PAW visit, it was clear that Quasi’s injured eye needs to be removed.  He has eye drops in the interim and the effect on the surrounding infected tissue, although good from a medical perspective, “doesn’t lose its shock value”, according to Quasi’s foster mom.  After daily applications of cream for his skin problem, at least things are improving on that front.

Surgery to remove Quasi’s eye and socket completely will cost SCAA at least RMB3000.  Although a reasonable investment for the long-term well being of an increasingly affectionate and happy cat, this is an extraordinary amount for SCAA to spend on medical care for one cat out of over 40 current foster cats.

SCAA needs your help to help Quasi.  For more information on Quasi and/or to donate towards Quasimodo’s eye surgery and follow-up treatment, please contact Lee-Anne at foster@scaashanghai.org.

  • Lindsay Tarlow from the U.S. -  Loads of flea and tick preventative products for our hoarder project!

SCAA Adoptable Adult Cat Uses 8 Out of 9 Lives

Cat

Cat Stats

Name:Cat
Age: 9 months
Rescue: Found on the street as a young kitten alone, cold and hungry during Shanghai winter.
Amazing feat: Survived a 10-floor fall out a window with only minor injury.
Status: Looking for a good permanent home..

Cat’s rescue story…

Cat’s rescuer found her as an abandoned kitten on the streets of Shanghai earlier this past winter.  Cold and hungry, Cat was grateful for a warm home.  Although sad to give up such a loyal and friendly kitten, Cat’s rescuer could not keep her and so Cat was taken into SCAA foster care a few months later.

Cat easily bonded with her foster mom and when she is not sprawled out by the laptop competing for attention or playing with her toys, Cat is never far from her foster mom’s feet – even moving from one spot on the kitchen floor to the other to stay close.

Cat’s current foster parents’ hands and feet show no signs of suffering from Cat’s predilection for “fingers and toes”.

…and 10-story fall

Cat

Like many interesting tales, Cat’s began late one hot summer night.  When Cat’s curiosity was no match for her poor sense of balance by an open window, she tumbled 10 floors below.  Thanks to the makeshift roof on the addition to the ground floor apartment, Cat’s fall was broken, but nothing else was.

After a couple days’ observation and care at PAW, everyone at SCAA was relieved that Cat survived her harrowing experience with only minor bruising and soreness and some short-lived anxiety (the latter also suffered by her foster mom!).

Cat’s loyal and affectionate personality doesn’t shine through at Adoption Day, where she finds the crowds and noise overwhelming, but foster parents unanimously agree that she will make a lovely pet.  SCAA is hoping Cat finds the great permanent home she deserves soon.  Cat would be an ideal pet for a single or couple without other pets.  She enjoys having a daytime companion.

Cat is treated for fleas, mites and worms.  She is also vaccinated and spayed.  For more information on Cat and on SCAA adoption, please contact Lee-Anne at foster@scaashanghai.org
