Dear SCAA Community,

Welcome back! The new fall season in Shanghai has begun and the kiddies are back in school, but the need for the city’s abandoned cats and dogs is no less than before. We had a tough summer but things are looking up with a very successful Adoption Day last weekend, where 11 fosters left us for permanent, loving homes.

Just a week from now, you’ll be able to pick up your own copies of the brand new 2009 SCAA Calendar! On sale starting next week from our booth at the Shanghai Expat Show for just RMB 100 or five for RMB 400. Also coming up just around the bend... a special meeting/mixer combo compliments of Summergate and Closed Door - not a bad way to dodge dinner duty and ease those Monday blues. Be sure to come out and show your support.

And tick tock... our 3rd annual Bachelor Auction is nearly here so don't forget to mark your calendar for next month's 'hot and spicy' event - October 24th at Moca's Art Lab. Our 'modern male' bachelors have been buffing up their bods and perhaps even their nails in anticipation of our biggest fundraiser of the year. We'll be keeping you posted...

Warmest Regards,
Stephanie Thomas

Put your paws together for an amazing SCAA's Adoption Day

anna
Anna and Capri do a ‘feline high five’ to celebrate their new home together!

After waiting months for good homes, several foster cats and kittens were fortunate to meet new families on Sunday. September has seen the return of adopters to Shanghai after long summer holidays and "paperwork" issues. SCAA has been receiving many adoption queries and it's fair to say we were all surprised, a bit overwhelmed, and very pleased when families and couples practically lined up, many with adoption questionnaires already in hand, to discuss adopting a rescued cat or kitten. We couldn't be happier for kitties Anna, Calee, Cat, Capri, Chili, Cinnamon, Freckles, Jinx, Lionel, Nunu and Pepper.

We are now wishing for the same success with the friendly and eager dogs from SCAA's local project and rescued from Shanghai streets. If you are interested in introducing man's best friend to your family, ask Jaycee at dogprogram@scaashanghai.org about the right match (and we don't mean color!) for you.

2,000 Cat Toys and Thanks a Million!

Everyone at SCAA extends a big thank you to new foster parents Helen and Jonas Heald from IKEA for their generous donation of TWO THOUSAND cat toys!. SCAA's local project and foster animals will be enjoying a catnip high for months to come. Helen, Jonas and the IKEA team believe pets are an important part of the family and we couldn't agree more! It was a feline frenzy last weekend when SCAA volunteers brought this amazing collection of IKEA bumble bees, butterflies, mice and aquamarine fish to our project.

That’s a LOT of cat toys!

Kind-hearted Folks & Quasimodo on the Mend

Quasimodo's care covered by generous donors

Quasimodo

Following a plea for injured foster cat Quasimodo in our last newsletter, SCAA is extremely grateful for the over RMB6000 in donations raised towards Quasi's eye surgery and ongoing care. Quasi has received over RMB4500 in treatment to date, including his surgery last Friday. The surgery to remove his infected eye and socket was a great success and Quasi is recuperating in his foster home. He is now preoccupied with cuddling, purring and trying to remove the large plastic cone from around his neck. His foster mom is waiting until Quasi has some post-op vet visits and he loses the cone before indulging him with his favorite activity - being dragged across the floor by his front paws!

SCAA extends a very special thanks to an anonymous donor and the following people for helping take care of Quasi:

Tala Haroun & family
Natasha Weaser

A Very ‘Special’ Wicket

Wicket

Introducing Wicket, a lovely little lady previously taken from Mr. Huang’s animal project and currently searching for a forever home. A bit shy at first, it doesn’t take long for Wicket to warm up as she’s easily warmed the hearts of her caring foster families so far.

Wicket

Unfortunately, along with her sweet disposition comes a very special need as Wicket is prone to seizures. After months of observation by PAW, Wicket has been diagnosed with possible canine epilepsy and her treatment has begun. As with humans, this condition is often easily treated with medication, and according to SCAA’s Medical Director Dr. James, “Many epileptic dogs can also have a full and long life on treatment.”

Wicket

Outside of these special needs, Wicket’s a sweet-natured dog, who’d fit well in many homes. But of course special dogs need special families, who would not only provide a loving home, but also the regular medication and check ups required. A small price to pay for a loyal, loving addition to your home. Could you be the forever home Wicket deserves so much? Please contact SCAA today.

*Did you also know that feeding your dog premium pet food benefits SCAA project animals?

In addition to a very generous donation from Shanghai Rose Royal Corp to support our local project animals, ProPac 15 kilogram bags are also available on sale now at PAW on SCAA's behalf from now until July 2009.

All proceeds from sales will support the 180+ cats and 8 dogs at SCAA's local hoarder project. Feed your dog ProPac and support Shanghai’s animals in need!
