Dear SCAA Community,

Very much to our relief, the warmer days of spring have finally arrived, albeit belatedly, and will hopefully hang around for a spell! Of course, we can't stress enough with warmer temps come new litters of kittens looking for a safe and comfortable home. These babies need you now more than ever. Keen and ready to foster a rescued kitty or provide a good permanent home? Contact us at foster@scaashanghai.org today! SCAA continues to need dog foster homes from our local project as well. If you can provide temporary care to an SCAA dog or are interested in providing a forever home to one of the many rescued dogs awaiting adoption, contact us at dogprogram@scaashanghai.org .

Don't throw that out!! Should you still have a late spring cleaning planned before the summer holidays, be sure to keep our cats and dogs at our local Huang Hoarder project in mind as they're always in need of old clothing, blankets, cushions, furniture, pet toys your cat or dog have grown tired of, you name it! And if you'll be staying for the summer, we'll be needing volunteers during our visits to help apply medication, bring much-needed supplies and play with the kitties (and few dogs on-site) giving them the attention they so desperately crave! Watch for visits on our website events calendar or contact an SCAA director for details.

In just a few weeks time, we're thrilled to be holding our second annual SCAA Kid's Art Awards ceremony on Sunday 25 May. For months, we've been collecting entries from kiddies citywide! We received over 150 submissions from so many talented youngsters - it's going to be a tough decision for sure. Be sure to cast your on-line vote before Friday's deadline!

And calling all dog lovers out there once again! Our doggie-centered activities are just getting started. Moon River Diner, together with Bark, and SCAA Dog ladies have started a trend of visits to the Sheshan dog park - fun for the whole family. Stay tuned for more doggie activities and special doggie mixers planned this summer. Hope to see you all there!

Warm regards,
Stephanie Thomas
SCAA PR Director

The Charitable-Minded Trend Continues...

Two Fabulous Causes for Another

Last April 20th, Dean Chamberlin and friends celebrated his 8th birthday party with purrrrfect birthday benevolence donating a grand total of RMB 1,000 including cool dog and cat food bowls, leashes, treats, toys and well-needed food and litter. Happy Birthday Dean and many thanks to all your critter-loving friends who took part!

SCAA's fearless Administrative and Volunteer Director Flora Clyde will soon be leaving us for greener hutongs in Beijing (sniff, sniff). On April 26th, her friends at Shanghai Racquet Club not only threw her a lovely goodbye soiree but reached deep into their own wallets to help SCAA raising a total of RMB 3,000!

SCAA Spring Kittens and Project Cats in Care

It has been an active couple of months for SCAA, PAW and foster parents as nearly 30 foster cats and kittens have been taken into foster care since March. From daring midnight rescues to PAW visits between business meetings, things have been busy!

The harsh winter has turned into a harsh spring for Shanghai's stray and abandoned companion animals and the friendly adult cats from our local project alike. Many of our foster cats and kittens are struggling with cold viruses, skin problems and even deadlier diseases. Foster parents are spending a lot of time shampooing, creaming, giving antibiotics and even steam baths, while SCAA has provided around RMB28,000 in medical care since early March.

Sadly, we lost 5 foster cats and kittens recently. Despite everyone's best efforts, Hobie, Andy, and 3 abandoned newborns (the lightest weighing only 25 grams) are no longer with us.

SCAA has been in contact with many people eager to offer a rescued cat or kitten a good permanent home. There are over twenty gorgeous new cat and kittens and a number of them are now ready for adoption. We're looking forward to helping people add a companion animal to their family soon.

In the meantime, foster parents without any pets are in high demand as an increasing number of newly-rescued cats and kittens need isolation. If you can foster a sick cat or kittens or would like more information on the cats and kittens currently in foster care, please contact Lee-Anne at foster@scaashanghai.org

In Search of a Forever Home...

This month, SCAA features a very special canine case: Rusty.

Rusty
I've been neutered and have all of my vaccinations. I love my walks and my pillow and if you rub my belly, you'll be my friend for life!

Rusty hasn't had the easiest of lives. Rescued by SCAA's very own Mr. Huang, his previous owners had constantly beaten him and abandoned him. A lover of all animals, Mr. Huang felt sorry for the poor mutt and took him into his care.

When Rusty first arrived at Mr. Huang's home, more tough lessons were learned when he challenged the pack leader (alpha-male dispute) receiving several severe bites at the back of his tail making him frightened of other dogs. When discovered by SCAA this past winter, he was found shivering in a corner with a hernia, ear mites and a serious eye infection. Rusty was immediately placed into SCAA's care and over the coming months received continuous medical care including a hernia operation, and extensive treatments for his ear mites and eye infection stemming from glaucoma.

Glaucoma is a group of disorders that lead to damage to the optic nerve, the nerve that carries visual information from the eye to the brain. Damage to the optic nerve causes vision loss, which may progress to blindness.
Unbeknownst by many pet lovers, it's a condition quite common in dogs.

Due to one trauma after the other, Rusty was far from the perfect pooch in the beginning and needed time to re-socialize with other dogs and humans. After several months of care and recovery in foster homes, he started to build back trust and slowly return to being the sweet boy that he surely once was before. He has had three foster homes so far and all of his foster parents adore him.

Unfortunately, Rusty was recently met with yet another trauma. Regardless of the endless efforts by PAW doctors and his foster parents, his eye infection increasingly worsened and the tough decision was made to remove his eye altogether. His first surgery just a few weeks ago was successful but less than one week later, he had to endure yet another surgery due to infection. Poor Rusty, our little trooper is hanging in there and thanks to the round-the-clock care and kindness of his foster parents, he is slowly recovering, after which he'll be ready for a permanent home! Could you be the ‘forever home' Rusty deserves so much??

Rusty

Then you had a stiff neck

You washed your hair and couldn't do a thing with it

You felt like you had a hangover and you weren't even drinking last night

Your new diet really doesn't seem to be working.

You pulled a muscle when you tried to exercise

Your new hat looked better on you at the store
